چکیده

Indian cities are experiencing an accelerated pace of growth since independence and are now emerging as centres of domestic and international investments in an era of economic reforms, liberalisation and globalization. This has created opportunities for technologists and planning professionals to guide and develop the process of planned development and management utilizing modern technologies. The availability of high resolution data from remote sensing satellites has revolutionized the process of thematic mapping and geospatial database creation, specially, in the context of urban and regional planning. Further, Geographic Information System (GIS) has emerged as a powerful tool in integrating and analyzing the various thematic layers along with attribute information to create and visualize various planning scenarios for decision making. The increasing demands in urban planning and management sectors call for integrated application of remote sensing and GIS for sustainable development of urban areas. The present work deals with the development of geospatial database for urban planning of Allahabad city of Uttar Pradesh State in India through the use of satellite data and other collateral data under GIS environment. IRS-1D LISS-III digital data has been used for the extraction and analysis of the land utilization pattern of Allahabad city. The various thematic layers generated include land use pattern, road network, water supply, solid waste disposal, soil map, ground water potential map, etc. and these have been integrated with socio-economic and demographic data of the city to model the urban growth of the city.

High Performance, Federated and Service-Oriented Geographic Information Systems

General purpose of GIS is extracting information/knowledge from the raw geo-data. The rawdata is collected from sensors, satellites or any other ways and stored in databases or file systems. The data goes through the filtering and rendering services and, presented to the endusers in human recognizable formats such as images, graphs, charts etc. A well-known example of GIS is map viewers which p...

The Web as a Data Source for Spatial Databases

With the phenomenal growth of the WWW, rich data sources on many different subjects have become available online. Some of these sources store daily facts that often involve textual geographic descriptions. These descriptions can be perceived as indirectly georeferenced data e.g., addresses, telephone numbers, zip codes and place names. Under this perspective, the Web becomes a large geospatial ...

Uses of High-resolution Imagery for Urban Transportation Applications: Quantitative Indices Extraction Approaches

Recently, new approaches with commercial high-resolution satellite imagery in the engineering application domains have been attempted. Among them, uses of remotely sensed imagery linked with GIS-T (Geographic Information Systems for Transportation) or transportation geography are regarded as one of prospecting issues. As the matter of facts, most transportation applications are needed real-time...

Sharing geospatial provenance in a service-oriented environment

One of the earliest investigations of provenance was inspired by applications in GIS in the early 1990’s. Provenance records the processing history of a data product. It provides an information context to help users determine the reliability of data products. Conventional provenance applications in GIS focus on provenance capture, representation, and usage in a stand-alone environment such as a...
